Are visitors entering under the Visa Waiver Program required to register online now?

Nationals of countries (27 at present) participating in the Visa Waiver Program may be eligible to enter as a visitor without a visa for up to 90 days. (There are no extensions.) Visa Waiver entry requires a round-trip ticket for departure from the U.S., a machine-readable passport valid for at least six months beyond the stay and, beginning in January 2009, online registration at least 72 hours in advance through the new Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is required. See http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/without/without_1990.html for additional information on the program and a list of participating countries.
